HERKIMER COUNTY HOME FOR AGED CEMETERY RECORDS
Route 28, Herkimer, New York

county homeThe Herkimer County Home for the Aged Cemetery records is an original transcription graciously provided to us by Betsy Voorhees of Herkimer. According to Betsy, "the markers go by numbers and the names belonging with the stone markers were recorded in the County Home records. This cemetery is well kept and not forgotten."

According to Jane Dieffenbacher, Fairfield Town Historian, "the Home for the Aged list is probably who is buried in the little cemetery across the road from the current county facility. In 1857 a stone building was built by the county to house the "destitute, homeless, insane, and orphans" two miles south of Middleville. This is in the Town of Herkimer. New wings were added in 1880. In 1973 the current modern residential facility was built across the road from the old, but still in the Town of Herkimer. They called it Herkimer County Home for the Aged until just recently when it was renamed."

updated 4/11/03 New information about burials and burial record-keeping at the old County Home follows the listings.

Site Coordinator's Comment: The 1910 report of County Home Inspector Mr. J.H.J. Watkins to the Board of Supervisors appears to explain why the surviving County Home records of burial start December 25, 1910, two days after Mr. Watkins' report. It would appear that prior to that time written records of burial weren't consistently or permanently kept, and markers of any type weren't provided that would pinpoint location of individuals buried. Mr. Watkins' statement below alludes to unmarked interment prior to 12/25/10 being made elsewhere on the County Home property - that there was another burial area used prior to the one known today as the old County Home Cemetery. After 92 years there are no eyewitnesses who can describe seeing burials made elsewhere, although the description below might help locate the final resting place of some County Home residents buried between 1857 and 1910.

Source: Proceedings of the Board of Supervisors of the County of Herkimer, 1910. Herkimer: Herkimer Democrat Press. 1910.

"During one of my visits in the summer, I asked to see the burial ground. The Superintendent and assistant both accompanied me. I found that recent burials had been made in the meadow below the road, just on the brow of the hill, overlooking the railroad. Upon inquiring I found that the obsequies were very commendably performed. The last duty or service to the paupers after death were all that could be asked or expected; but I was surprised to find that the burial place itself and the care it received was neither Christian nor decent. I have no disposition to find fault with previous administrations, suffice it to say that the present Superintendent was more than willing to assist in establishing a suitable burial place for the unfortunate inmates of the County Home. The Purchasing Agent, Mr. Ferguson, was equally interested and we arranged for a visit together on which occasion we decided on the location of the new cemetery. Hereafter the paupers buried at the County Home will have a proper burial and each grave will have a marker and a number corresponding with records of the County Home. The Purchasing Agent and the Superintendent are exceptionally pleasant men to do business with and deeply interested in the comfort of the inmates and the economical management of the institution."

J.H.J. Watkins,
County Home Inspector
Dec. 23rd, 1910.

From general remarks about County Home goals and accomplishments made by I.H. Comstock, Superintendent of the Poor, dated Nov. 1, 1910 (p.200)

"A cemetery, 75 by 85 feet has been laid out in a beautiful spot on the farm, an iron fence has been built around it and hereafter a suitable marker will be placed at each grave."
