FRANKFORT IMMIGRANTS FROM ORIOLO, ITALY |
---|
We're very happy to inaugurate the section for the Town of Frankfort, Herkimer County, with resources about area settlers from Italy. The list of Italian surnames originating in Oriolo, Italy was sent to us by Joseph Oriolo, a resident of Frankfort. We welcome any material about ancestors who came later in the 19th and early 20th century - Italians, people of Eastern Europe, Jews, people of African descent, Scandinavians, etc. - on all of our township pages.
Another Oriolo researcher and a former resident of Frankfort, George Lilli, is currently working on his Oriolo, Migration to US site, a clearinghouse and meeting place for people researching their roots back in Oriolo and the region of Calabria. George's links will lead you from the early 20th century all the way back to the earliest tribes and their contacts with other Europeans.
Our research into the earliest surnames shows us that families often moved in groups from specific villages to specific areas of Herkimer and Montgomery Counties. Word got back that it was a nice place to live, a place of opportunity. Neighbors stayed neighbors. In the case of Frankfort, and the new and more prosperous life in America it offered, word traveled quickly back to the town of Oriolo and many immigrants came to work and permanently settle.
Joseph Oriolo tells us: "These families settled in both the village and town of Frankfort, arriving in America from at least the 1880's into the 1900's. I have more data on my home page at http://members.aol.com/Oriolo1 and will respond to questions that anyone has concerning these surnames."
"The town of Oriolo is located in the province of Cosenza in the region of Calabria. The region of Calabria is the most southern region on the Italian mainland. The province of Cosenza is the most northern province within the region. Provinces in Italy correspond to our counties and regions correspond to our states. I assume that the main attraction for immigrants settling in Frankfort was the West Shore Railroad depot that probably provided many laborer jobs. My grandfather, Giuseppe Oriolo, worked as a foundry man for the West Shore Railroad. He later worked as a laborer at Remington Arms (photo)."
