"The Society of Mayflower Descendants had its origin in the State of New York, where an organization
was formed in the month of December, 1894. Societies were formed in Connecticut and Massachusetts
in March, 1896, and in Pennsylvania in the following July.
The General Society was organized at Plymouth, Massachusetts, January 12, 1897, at a meeting
of delegates representing the four State societies.
The General Board of Assistants chartered the Society in Illinois, June, 1897; those in the District of
Columbia and Ohio in March, 1898; New Jersey in August, 1900, and in February, 1901 those of Wisconsin,
Rhode Island and Michigan. At later dates were chartered societies in the States of Minnesota, Maine
and Colorado.
On January 11, 1908, a charter was granted to a society organized in California, and to one
in the State of Washington on March 28, 1912. Subsequently, charters were granted to societies in Kansas,
Indiana, Nebraska and North Carolina. The society in Minnesota is now (1926) inactive.
The nineteen State societies comprised in the General Society have an aggregate membership of about 6,000."
