By Irene Fox Uttendorfsky
Thomas Fox was born in Ireland about 1791. He emigrated to this country about 1828. He married, probably in Newport, Herkimer Co., NY about 1829, Nancy Davis, daughter of John and Maria Davis. Nancy was born in Herkimer Co., NY about 1807. By 1836 Thomas was able to purchase, for the sum of four hundred and twenty five dollars, fifty acres of land in Newport. According to the 1850 Federal Census he was a farmer, owning real estate valued at $1500. Thomas filed a letter of Intent to be naturalized in 1842. His petition to be naturalized was filed in 1850 and on 9 Oct 1850 he received American Citizenship. Thomas Fox died at Newport, Herkimer Co., NY 3 Jun 1858 and is buried in the Irish Settlement Cemetery there.
The children of Thomas and Nancy (Davis) Fox:
Peter Fox, son of Thomas and Nancy (Davis) Fox, was born at Newport, Herkimer Co., NY about 1841. He married about 1867 Mary Ann Jones, daughter of William and Olive (Coley) Jones. She was born in Schuyler, Herkimer Co, NY in June 1846. She died in Herkimer, Herkimer Co., NY 5 Dec 1905. Peter died in Copenhagen, Lewis Co., NY 8 Sept 1899.
The children of Peter and Maryann (Jones) Fox:
I made contact with a son of Elva May (Fox) Smith in the early 1980s. He said that the Fox family resided in the section of Newport called "Honey Hill."
