Towns of Norway and Russia

Herkimer County NY

"John W. Stanton is connected primarily with the town of Russia (connected to the Hinckley family). John's wife, Caroline's, sisters once rented the sawmillthat my great-grandfather later owned. I have also seen John's name on plat maps showing ownership of large amounts of land around Wilmurt and have seen his name in various documents in the town of Morehouse too."

Note: There are a couple of family trees on Ancestry/Rootsweb that have more information about the Stanton and Hinckley families, including information about John's first wife (mother of his son, William).

John W. Stanton was born about 1815 in MA. He had a son, William, from his first marriage. He was married second to Caroline Hinckley by 1860. She was born 20 Oct 1834. John and Caroline first lived in the town of Norway (1860 census) and then in the town of Russia (1870 census on). John W. Stanton, at one time, owned a fair amount of property in northern Herkimer county and in neighboring Hamilton county. He worked with his father-in-law, Gardiner Hinckley, in the lumber business and was a prominent man "in his own right" in the area. His son, William, was born in October 1843 in CT. John died 4 Apr 1896 and his second wife Caroline died 25 Nov 1912. William was still living, unmarried, in the 1910 census in the town of Russia with his step-mother and her unmarried sisters, Mary E. Hinckley and Sarah Helen Hinckley.
