W.E.'s last paragraph says it all...
"I was requested by the Bauters of Avoca, NY, to give them as much as I could of Geo. A. Bauter family. I thought that some
of you would appreciate something like I have endeavored to do. It has been no small task. Please carefully keep this Genealogy.
Someone 50 years from now may care for it."
"While researching the Bauter family from Stark(e), NY, we found written information about the family's activities during the
American Revolution. I refer to a letter titled "Genealogy of the Bauter Family", written by W. E. Searles (son of Katherine Bauter) in March 1931.
The letter starts out with the dates 1754, when Uriah Bauter was born, then expands as the Bauter family married,
then reverts to the Searles family and then the Wheeler family. The first couple of paragraphs details, in a "nebulous" way, the
capture of Uriah Bauter's's family by Indians and Tories and their subsequent return some 12 yrs later. After 12 years, the son (who was
9 when he was captured) was returned only to be killed in a barn raising. I would consider this might add insight into the culture and
circumstance of the Stark(e) citizens in the late 1700's. I'd appreciate your comments or questions on this document, for I too had to
do much research to clarify some lineage questions. The biggest question remains, that of Urial, Urich, etc.,...... while the W. E.
Searles document states the correct spelling is Uriah Bauder (changed to Bauter)......what's your guess?"

GENEALOGY of the BAUTER family
By: W. E. Searles March 1931
URIAH BAUTER was born in Germany or Holland (not sure which) in 1754. He with two brothers came to America while young men, and he
and one brother engaged in farming while the other brother became a blacksmith, became wealthy and died a bachelor. URIAH also became
prosperous and owned a large tract of land. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and during his absence in the war, his wife and
5 children were taken prisoners by Indians and Tories. The wife and 4 children were released but the oldest son, a boy of 9 years,
was taken to Canada and held for 12 years, when he was escorted back to his own home by a Tory, who was one of the capturing party
and who returned before his identity became known. The young man was accidentally killed, at a raising, soon after his return.
ADAM BAUTER, one of the 5 children, was born in Montgomery Co. NY 1779. He went to the town of Stark, Herkimer Co. NY, where
he spent his life at farming. He married Catherine Wagner, a native of Herkimer Co. and by whom her had ten (10) Children.
The 3 daughters and 7 sons of Adam & Catherine Bauter:
1. Mrs. Betsy Ford (had children but I know nothing about them)
2. Mrs. Jacob Dillenbeck (had a large family, the youngest son Leroy, lives in Avoca, NY)
3. Catherine (married an older brother of my father, Lewis Searles), 2 children -
Eliza, married Jefferson Browell. They had 3 children, a daughter & 2 sons, all living.

2. JOHN married Catherine Ackerson-no children-both died at their home in Bath, NY. John was a wealthy man-large part of his property willed to his many nephews.
3. ADAM married Sarah Webb-daughter and son-Jennie, the daughter, married Samuel Hitchcock-one daughter, Sarah, second marriage to a
Mr. Sours. Mother and daughter living, the last we knew, in Toronto, Canada.
4. MARCUS (Plenty information---Marcus was the one who left the early record. He was born March 28, 1814 in Herkimer Co. NY and
died Feb. 24, 1896. He worked in a store, beginning at the age of 12. In 1835 he came to Wheeler, Steuben Co. NY and purchased a tract
of timber land. The first 2 winters and 3 summers he taught school. With the money earned he hired his land cleared of timber. He
kept adding to it until he owned 500 acres. Nov. 3 1840, he married Sarah Eels. They had 10 children-8 of them grew up and were
married-now all dead save the youngest son who lives in Avoca, NY.
5. PETER died more than 60 years age--left 3 sons. Lynn, a grandson, lives in Hammondsport, NY

A word more, the name at first was spelled with a D not a T, - Bauder not Bauter. Also, there is a question of URIC BAUTER did not come from Holland and not from Germany.
