Jim Murphy's Postcards of West Winfield, Town of Winfield

Welcome

My name is Jim Murphy. I have lived in West Winfield my entire life as have several generations of my family before me. I attended school at West Winfield and later Mount Markham after the Bridgewater, Leonardsville, and West Winfield School Districts merged in the late 60s.

After graduating from college I married the former Cheryl Armstrong from West Exeter and purchased a home in the village of West Winfield near the site of the old Winfield Academy. With relatives owning businesses in the Village, being involved in politics and the local fire department, it was only natural for me to follow their footsteps. My grandfather (Ben) and my dad (James F.) were Village Board members and Mayors; so far I've only accomplished the Village Board member part, and have no desire at this time to be Mayor! I've also followed in my dad's involvement in the fire department by serving, as he did, as Fire Chief for several years.

My personal interest in computers, genealogy, local history and the advent of eBay has led me to begin an ever expanding collection of local post cards and other times associated with West Winfield, West Exeter and the surrounding areas. I'm glad that Martha at New York GenWeb has provided me with the opportunity to share some of my cards and photos with you. I hope you enjoy them and if you have any questions, stories, or history to share, please forward them to the site manager or to myself.

#4: Mill Pond, West Winfield, N.Y. - This photo postcard is of the mill pond created by the dam across the Unadilla River on South Street (Route 51) in the village of West Winfield. The pond is behind the dam and extends back into what today is the Memorial Park, accessible off Route 20 in the Village. The pond was a source of swimming in the summer, skating and ice harvesting in the wintertime. Today it is quite filled in with silt and is mostly grown up with reeds and cattails.
