A letter written 47 years ago, kept on file with the cemetery list. Perhaps this list was made by the City Historian? It appears that Mr. Siep, to whom the letter was addressed, was in charge of marking graves for a local veterans' organization or historical group.

August 5th, 1957

Mr. Oscar Siep
15 Churchill St.
Little Falls, N.Y.

Dear Sir,

Yesterday afternoon, I was up in the old Wilcox Cemetery, checking some dates on stones, and was surprised to find the old cemetery had been adandoned, and overgrown with trees and weeds. I was talking to Elmer Munk, and he told me that you were now in charge of the grave decorating and I noticed that there were still quite a number of flags, remaining, after three months. It must be quite a job, in that tangled underbrush, to find the graves that should be decorated.

For your convenience, here is a list of Civil War Veterans, according to my files, who are buried here:

Huldah Clemens Monument decorated

James Hurley    "

Seward Quackenbush    "

Peter Lake    "

Warren Shipman    "

William Lynch    "

No monuments visible, today ----------

O'Reilly Snell

Charles Pantz

Israel Pickard

David Bass

Peter Egan

Solomon Goodbread

Walter Harris

John McLaughlin

John Moody

John Walrath

Barney Walrath

Peter Yeagans

Some of the above grave markers may be there, but have fallen over, and are overgrown with weeds. I recall that I visited the abandoned cemetery of Beardslee Mills, twenty years ago, and counted a hundred markers. Last summer, I again visited it, and couldn't locate half that number.

Sincerely,

City Historian.

Transcriber's Footnote: "My husband, Bernard Grainer, was certain he had some of his Goodbread ancestors buried in this cemetery but could not find any list on the web anywhere, so I, his wife, Winifred Perry Grainer, decided to try getting the list from the Little Falls Historical Society - with the promise that I would then get it published to the web. Well, I have to say we were somewhat dismayed at the fact that yes, Solomon Goodbread, a Civil War Veteran, is listed as being buried here, but, none of his other family members are listed. What ever happened to his first wife, Anna Southwick, and his second wife, Eliza Taylor Tubbs?? Well, that gives us something more to ponder. Bernie is looking for Goodbreds(Goodbreads), Suits, Grainers, Davis ancestors. All of whom are of German origin. Hope this listing is of help to others. Happy Hunting, The Grainers."

If you can help with information about Solomon, Anna, and Eliza, please contact Winnie directly. (Please do not email for information about people buried in this cemetery.)
