The 1870 census is composed of the following 20 columns with headers entitled:
column 1: dwelling-houses numbered
in the order of visitation
column 2: families numbered in
the order of visitation
column 3a-b: the name of every person whose usual place of abode
on the first day of June, 1870, was in this family.
column 4: description: age on last
birth-day. If under 1 year, give months in fractions, thus 2/12.
column 5: description: sex - Male
(M.), Female (F.)
column 6: description: color: white
(W.), black (B.), mulatto (M.), chinese (C.) or Indian (I.)
column 7: profession, occupation
or trade of each person, male or female.
column 8: value of real estate
owned: value of Real Estate
column 9: value of real estate
owned: value of Personal Estate
column 10: place of birth, naming the state,
territory of U.S. or country, if of foreign birth
column 11: parentage: father of foreign birth
column 12: parentage: mother of foreign birth
column 13: if born within the year, state month
(Jan., Feb., etc.)
column 14: if married within the year, state
month (Jan., Feb., etc.)
column 15: attended school within the year
column 16: education: cannot read
column 17: education: cannot write
column 18: whether deaf and dumb, blind, insane,
or idiotic
column 19: constitutional relations:
male citizen of U.S. of 21 years of age and upwards
column 20: constitutional relations:
male citizen of U.S. of 21 years of age and upwards whose right to vote
is denied or abridged, on other grounds than rebellion or other crime.
