THE CHURCHES of HERKIMER COUNTY

Churches of Ilion, N.Y.
The Herkimer County Church section is our directory of articles and
features about the local churches themselves. We hope to someday have on line more actual records, but they're difficult to come
by. Existing records are by and large owned or held by historical societies and churches themselves. Some surviving records have
been filmed by the Mormon Church, with permission of the institutions holding the records, and a sample listing of records already
microfilmed is in our Libraries section. Some records are for sale through Kinship Books, listed in
our commercial books section. Other records have been abstracted from the originals by writers who
hold the copyright to their work and are in scattered journals.
As this section grows we'll have more articles on area churches, their ministers and members, photos, a bibliography, and anything
else we can come up with. If you're a resident of Herkimer County we'd appreciate it if you asked your minister or priest if
they have any pamphlets or other written material about the history of your church. Do they have lists of yearly membership
records, marriages, funerals, etc. that have not been transcribed? Do they have photos of 19th century ministers that they would
let you scan? Would you be willing to take snapshots of the older churches, rectories, and neighboring churchyards in your town?
This is one section that needs visitor input!
An excellent contemporary resource about Herkimer County churches is "Prayer and Praise: Churches in Herkimer County, 1723-1981"
written by Emily R. Denton, with photographs by Steve Tooney and others. "Prayer and Praise" was published in paperback by
the Herkimer County Historical Society in 1981 and may be purchased from the Society. Churches are
indexed both by name and by township. The book includes a short, thorough historical profile of every church in the county still in
existence, with clear black and white photographs.
