COLUMBIA CIVIL WAR VOLUNTEERS: 1861- 65 |
The list of Columbia's soldiers was transcribed for us by Laura Perkins from "The History Herkimer County, N.Y." by F.W. Beers & Co., 1879. This local list shows that men from Columbia joined a variety of regiments and individual companies. The editors did not put the men's names in any particular order and it has been alphabetized for browsing convenience.
"Columbia was one of the towns whose clerks, in compliance with Chapter 690 of the laws of 1865, prepared a record of the soldiers from their towns in the civil war, with the date of their entering the service and the circumstances of their leaving it. This record for Columbia is appended; the abbreviations denoting the different ranks and arms of the service will be recognized."

Columbia's volunteer list was typed by Laura Perkins, whose gg-grandfather served in the 146th NY Vol. Infantry. Other family members were well-represented in local regiments. Laura is researching the family names of SNYDER and BAKER. Her ggg-grandparents were Richard K. and Elizabeth Snyder Baker. Richard was born in Schuyler. Elizabeth, the daughter of John and Catherine Snyder, was born in Frankfort. Laura believes that Richard and Eliz. lived most of their lives in Utica, NY. Any information on them would be most helpful.
Note: Neither Laura or other Herkimer/Montgomery GenWeb volunteers have any further information about the men listed above. If you find your ancestor listed, his records can be ordered from the National Archives.
