An Appeal to the High School Graduate to Come to College.

In these days it seems to me that it would be a waste of time to write on such a subject as "The Benefits of Higher Education." We all know and acknowledge that a college education puts man in a position to get the most out of life, and to contribute the most to his fellowmen. Since we all recognize this fact, naturally the majority of High School graduates, if not openly, at least deep down in their hearts, have a desire to go to college. The question with many is a pecuniary one. Perhaps one's parents cannot help him at all, or can only pay part of his expenses. Even though this is the case, if one has the desire and determination to go through college, it is possible in a great majority of cases. I cannot, of course, discuss the possibilities of working one's way through any other university except Cornell, with any direct knowledge of my subject, but as a Cornell undergraduate, I can tell the various ways of supporting oneself while working for a degree from Cornell.

The first thing to be considered is the tuition. Everyone knows about the regular Cornell Scholarships, and also about the new State Scholarships, which were first given last year. There are also eighteen University Scholarships, given to entering Freshmen as the result of competitive examinations held before college opens in the fall, which pay the student $200 a year, for the first two years. These scholarships are worth trying for, and worth winning.

But even if one does not win a scholarship, he should not give up all thought of coming to college. The Colleges of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, which are institutions of the first rank, offer free courses to residents of New York State. Cornell possesses, probably without exception, the best and finest equipped agricultural college in the world. And agriculture is the coming profession. There are a dozen different courses one can pursue, including such as horticulture, dairying, forestry, soils survey work and domestic economy. Because one takes agriculture, he does not necessarily have to go on a farm after graduation, although this is coming more and more to be a thoroughly desirable occupation. This course prepares for the teaching of agriculture, and the State is constantly offering positions as inspectors of farms, testers of milk and the like to agricultural graduates.

For the girls, domestic science is an ideal course. Domestic economy teachers are being paid from $50 to $200 a year more than teachers of other subjects, and when they wish to get married and settle down, they have something at their disposal which can be put into practical use in the management and care of the home. While the knowledge of German poetry and of the declension of Latin verbs is a good thing in its place, it doesn't help one to cook a dinner, whereas the application of the knowledge and experience gained in a course in "Domicon" brings forth good results.

If one doesn't know what profession he wishes to follow, he should come to college anyway, and before the end of the first year (which to a large extent is similar in all the colleges) he will discover what work interests him, and will find some means of taking it, even if he has to borrow money for the tuition. The university has a loan fund, with which it aids deserving students by lending them money at 5 per cent interest, to be paid back after graduation.

Of course, there are many other expenses, such as board, room and laundry, and if one is strong and healthy, he can pay his way as he goes along. Board is $5 a week, and probably the easiest way to earn it is by waiting table or washing dishes. There are many such positions to be had if application is made a couple of weeks before college opens. Rooms rent from $2 to $5 a week. This can he earned by doing from one to two hours' work a day. One can tend furnaces, clear walks, take care of lawns, work gardens, or do any of a thousand and one different things. Girls do housework, care for children and act as companions to elderly ladies. There is nearly always work if one really wants it.

What one is aiming at all the time is an education and after giving up five hours a day to outside work, there are still ten left for studies and recreation. This will probably seem rather hard at first thought but there is much enjoyment and pleasure to be had, even if one is working. It is a pleasure for one just to he here. and to feel that he is a part of a big university.

Then there are the university lectures, free to the public. These lectures are given by prominent men, specialists, along particular lines, and famous explorers. Organ recitals for the music lover are given every Friday in the chapel. Furthermore, this spring the custom has been started of bringing world famous musicians to Ithaca to give concerts at moderate prices. For the athlete, there are many chances of making the various teams, if not the varsities, then the inter-college teams. Because one is working, he is not shut out from these sports. Many of our best athletes are doing outside work. John Paul Jones, the world famous runner, who graduated last year, earned part of his expenses while in college. There are in the university at the present time, of the 6,000 registered, over 1,000 earning part of their way, and over 125 earning all their expenses.

In spite of the pecuniary obstacles, then, that stand in the way of many who are eager for a college education, practical experience proves that it is entirely possible for them to come to the university, work to pay their way, earn their degrees, and at the same time take an active part in its sports and pleasures.
