THE JONES FAMILY
The information in this essay is my 20-year effort to sort out the descendants of Alonzo Jones, who was my
mother-in-law's great-great-grandfather. This has been an interesting but frustrating study due to the
remarriages of Alonzo's father Peter and Alonzo's widow, Helen.

Alonzo JONES' name is listed among others on a large monument in the new part of the Evans Mills Cemetery erected by the G.A.R. on July 4, 1885. For those who are not aware of what the G.A.R. stands for, it was the Grand Army of the Republic, a society of men who fought for the North in the Civil War. It was founded in 1866 and discontinued in 1956 when it's last member died. It was apparently similar to the V.F.W. The Evans Mills Cemetery is just outside the village of Evans Mills on Goulds Corners Road.
After Alonzo Jones died, Helen married a man by the name of David ZIMMERMAN. David served in Company H, 10th Regiment NY Volunteers and Co I 10th NY Heavy Artillery during the Civil War. His obit says he was born in St. Johnsville, NY on April 11, 1840.
I am not sure of the connection with my wife's JONES family but it sure looks like there is one. So I've will endeavored to begin this laborious task in the hopes that it helps me in my JONES research and attempts to figure out the JONES-ZIMMERMAN connection.
DAVID ZIMMERMAN
- Born: April 11, 1840 at St. Johnsville, NY
- Died: August 4, 1916, Dexter, NY (August 3, 1916 in Horton Bible)

- Married:
- Alonzo-

In the Dexter, NY cemetery, all on one gravestone, is David Zimmerman 1840-1916 Co I 10th NY H Art; Helen, his wife 1844-1873; and their children Alonzo and Helen, no dates.
David Zimmerman's obituary stated that he was 76 years old, was in Co. H 10th NY volunteers, and died at the home of his step-daughter, Mrs. Edwin P. Jones of Glen Park, NY. The funeral was at his son's, David L. Zimmerman, near Brownsville, NY. He was survivved by another son, William.
The obituaries of both Elliott A. Jones and Anna Jones Dillenbeck stated that they were survived by a half-brother David ZIMMERMAN of Brownsville, NY.
After Helen died it appears that her second husband David Zimmerman remarried in July 1881 in Brownsville, NY to Mrs. Rachel ( nee DOTY) HORTON ( December 15, 1845 - March 20, 1910 ). This is noted in the Bible of Henry Horton, Rachel's first husband.
The 1900 Town of Brownville, Jefferson County, NY census lists the following:
David Zimmerman, head of family, b. ? 1840, 60 years old
Rachel, wife, b. December 1845, 54 years old, mother of two children and they are living. Both born NY.
My father-in-law, who was born in 1910, said that he had worked with an old man named David ZIMMERMAN when he was young. This David Zimmerman was my mother-in-law's relative somehow.
Child of David and Rachel Zimmerman:
- William Stoner Zimmerman-
- Born: February 9, 1884 ( in Horton Bible )
- Died:
- Married:
Rachel Horton Zimmerman was previously married to Henry HORTON ( January 25, 1833 - March 16, 1909 in Cape Vincent, NY, age 76 ) on January 1, 1860 in Chaumont, NY. Rachel DOTY was said to be born December 15, 1845 and died March 20, 1910, Brownville, NY age 65.
Children of Rachel Horton Zimmerman and Henry HORTON:

- Edwin Dudley JONES-
- Born: June 26, 1903 in Glen Park, NY
- Died:
- Married:
In the Brownville, NY cemetery in one plot are:
- Rachel, wife of David Zimmerman 1846 - 1910
- Estella Horton Jones 1865 - 1931 (daughter of Rachel Horton Zimmerman)
- Edward M. Jones 1857 - 1945 (husband of Estella )
- Ned P. Jones 1889 - 1931 (son of Edwin and Estella)
- Another stone in the same cemetery said F. Gordon Jones ( 1900 - 1979 ) and Vianna B. Seeber Jones ( 1889 - 1931 ). This couple is the son and daughter-in-law of Edwin and Estella Horton Jones.
Most of this information comes from the family Bible records of Henry HORTON, Rachel's first husband.
These Bible records were xeroxed from the Flower Memorial Library in Watertown, NY, and published by the
American Bible Society. Also mentioned in the Bible was Caroline DEMELL, who died
December 22, 1907 in Buffalo, NY and Margaret SNELL JONES, who died February 14,
1901, age 76. She would be the mother-in-law of Estelle HORTON and is in the 1870 census below.
Estella's husband Edwin JONES family is a different Jones family than my wife's. This Jones family
appears in the 1870 census, Town of Brownville, Jefferson County, NY. They are:
Philester JONES: 63, teamster; all born NY
Margaret JONES: 48, keeping house ( her maiden name was Snell )
Alicus(?) JONES: 17, female, spooler in cotton mill
Mary JONES: 15, spooler in cotton mill
