PENSIONERS OF HERKIMER COUNTY, N.Y.

On the Roll on January 1, 1883

Source: List of Pensioners on the Roll, January 1, 1883; Giving the Name of Each Pensioner, the Cause for Which Pensioned, the Post-office Address, the Rate of Pension Per Month, and the Date of Original Allowance, as called for by the Senate Resolution of December 8, 1882. Volume II. United States Pension Bureau. Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office. 1883

All spellings are as in the original report and we will not be changing them. Government military and pension record files for all individuals listed may be ordered, using the pension certificate numbers given, from the National Archives. For other information, please order a search from the Herkimer County Historical Society or request info from researchers who share your lines.

The listings are for pensioners receiving benefits on January 1, 1883, and includes dependents of deceased veterans. Several years later, Federal legislation gave pension benefits based on service of all veterans, not just men who'd had disability claims accepted before the 1890 census. Other veterans and dependents can be picked up on the 1890 Veterans Census; when searching the census, be sure and check counties where a surviving mother, widow, or dependent child was living to see if they're listed. After 1890, don't forget the more unusual case of surviving fathers - in 1894, one of my 93-year-old ggg-gfs filed a claim based his recently-deceased wife's surviving mother's pension, received for their son who'd been killed at the Wilderness. I don't know how that turned out as he died a few months later. If you pursue that avenue, you need the deceased soldier's name and regiment or the mother's claim number. At some point (I don't know when but at least by 1909, as was the case of one of my ggg-gms), a remarried widow, if widowed again, could make a claim on the service of an earlier husband. Check out the large 2-volume index of remarried widows, indexed by last name at time of claim - "Index to US military pension applications of remarried widows for service between 1812 and 1911," transcribed by Virgil D. White. Waynesboro, Tenn: National Historical Publishing Co., 1999.
