HERKIMER MEN IN THE SERVICE DURING WORLD WAR II

The following list of names are copied from records at the Herkimer Public Library's Genealogy Room. Thanks go to Mr. William (Bill) Arthur for having the insight to diligently record and preserve these articles of World War II for future use. With the permission of Heidi Moody, the Library Director, and Mr. Arthur, I am typing the names from this most valuable list exactly as they are recorded.

Mr. Arthur, formerly of Herkimer, has spent many years researching with his wife Evelyn, both donating their time to genealogy and preserving history. This valuable binder is an example of one of Mr. Arthur's free offerings to the public. We hope readers of this article are pleased with their findings in these significant records.

These names represent pages in a large black notebook recording events of World War II in which newspaper clippings have been cut and pasted on 9 x 11" sheets of paper, with each sheet of paper being protected by a plastic cover. The pages are numbered accordingly - if you find your ancestors name and visit the Frank J. Basloe Library (Herkimer Public Library) you can look in this book under the page number and see either a picture or the articles on that page. Some individuals have several articles from the newspapers, thus, this explains why you see a repeat of certain names.

These articles include such write-ups as Missing in Action, Prisoner of War, Recipients of Purple Heart, Notification of Prisoner of War, Honors, Pilots Downed, Next of Kin Notifications, etc.

The Frank J. Basloe Library is located at 245 N. Main Street in the village of Herkimer, N.Y. This is just a short distance down from the Herkimer County Historical Society. A copying machine is located on the premises for those visiting who would desire to make a copy for their records.
