POTTER. In Salisbury, Elizabeth Potter, age 68. About 8 years earlier she had converted to Universalism. No services were held at her burial because no Universalist clergyman was able to attend in place of G. M. [Rev. George Messinger]. He conducted a memorial service on "Sunday the 29th ult." "His father was one of three brothers who came to this country from Holland before the French and English war. In this war he held a captain's commission in the English army." During the Rev. War he chose the American side, and was placed in charge of the fort at Middleburg. In 1777 he, his wife, and one child, a boy of six, were massacred near the fort by Mohawks." Three sons, including Tunis, were taken as prisoners to Canada and exchanged after a year. Tunis was married in Schoharie Co. and lived there nearly 50 years after the war, then moved to Columbia.
