BACKUS | Benjamin Warren Backus was born Oct. 11 1818 at town of Winfield, NY to Benjamin Backus, mother's name unknown, 8th of 10 children. When he was 5 his father died and his mother was left with the large family to provide for on a small farm. He scarcely knew what home was from about the age of 7. As he grew he became a teacher and then became a carpenter. At 18 he moved to Orleans Co. NY. In the spring of 1840 he married Rhoda A. Houseman of Yates, NY and they moved to MI in 1848. He located in Orange Co. MI and set up farming the land. He acted in the capacity of pulpit supply and was given charge of a church at Leoni, Jackson Co., MI. He and Rhoda were parents of Samuel Warren, Odessa Benjamin, and Colorado Parker. It's believed that his father could be the Benjamin Backus buried at Meetinghouse Green Cemetery, Winfield, NY because of the name and because the burial date agrees with the time of the death of Benjamin Warren Backus's father. No information is known on any of the 9 siblings, the mother's maiden name, or if she remarried. | Marilyn J. Lindemann |
BARNES | Hello, my name is Dale Barnes and I am researching my husband's Barnes family. I was on the website [that's on our site looking at the births listed for 1848 and found a relative Frances Barnes born December 17, 1848 in Winfield to William and Sarah Ann Barnes. Her full name is Frances Alpho Barnes according to a family book we have. And Sarah Ann Barnes is Sarah Ann Rood Barnes. This family moved on to South Cortland, Cortland Co, NY by 1850 where the next child, Milo Barnes, my husband's great grandfather was born February 9, 1850. While my husband and I now live in Virginia, his family did not wander far from this area in Central NY. His grandfather went from Cortland to Syracuse where his father and he himself were born. My husband grew up in Liverpool, NY and his father still lives there today. The book we have says that Frances Alpho Barnes married Wilbur F. Sanders on February 3, 1877 and that he (Wilbur) died February 22, 1916. It does not say when she died. Their children are: Clayton Rowley Sanders, born March 24, 1878 Daniel Henry Sanders, born April 24, 1882 Clayton Rowley Sanders married (first) Mrs. Carylin Brown, December 25, 1908, she died December 4, 1917. Their child is Rolland Sanders, born at Auburn, N.Y., September 1, 1909 Clayton Rowley Sanders, married (second) Mrs. Florence Barrows Aroas, Feb. 4, 1920 Daniel Henry Sanders born at South Cortland, April 24, 1882, married Josephine McNett, November 9, 1910. Their child: Daniel H. Sanders, born in Kingston, N.Y., June 9, 1913. I have not discovered yet where William Barnes the father of Frances was born. But Sarah Ann Rood Barnes was the daughter of Ezra Rood, 2nd and Demaris Potter and born March 17, 1829. Our book does not say where she was born but the next sibling was born in Plainfield in 1831. Ezra Rood, 2nd, was born at Bristol (name later changed to Broome), Schoharie County, N.Y., Feb. 25, 1802 and died in Cortland, N.Y., April 21, 1886. He married Demaris Potter, of Winfield, Sept. 30, 1824. She was born Feb. 17, 1803 and died at Cortland, July 16, 1887. I am glad that this website speaks about Winfield, Plainfield...and that they are in close proximity. So I'm dropping you this line to tell you that yes I did recognize someone on that page and that thankfully the information in the book we have matches this transcript and to thank the researchers and others that have made a great and informative website. Sincerely, Dale Barnes | Dale Barnes |
