Cemetery on Fall Hill Road (Hess) Cemetery

There's been a lot of Hess Family activity this summer [Year 1998], both on line and at a recent reunion of descendants. Contributing Editor Laura Perkins, a Hess descendant, visited this cemetery earlier this month, took a new reading, and compared it to a list she got from the helpful Little Falls Historical Society. Their own list was titled "Cemetery Top of Fall Hill Rd. Rt 5S", and is probably what the U.S. Geological Service refers to as the Hess Cemetery of Little Falls.
" Off thruway take the lst left, then 1st right which is 5s, on Fall Rd. The barn at top of hill is on left and a house on the right. The cemetery is behind a trailer and up a hill, with wrought iron fence around it, but the gate does open. Walking up hill to cemetery, had snake go over me, but other than that uneventful. I stopped at a house and they told me an old woman maintains grounds, but didn't think she owned it but had relatives up there. Cemetery very well maintained, no weeds, and shows that someone cares. "
"I think the other reading was done between 1916 and 1926 and that is why it doesn't have all the names. When there it was hard to see sometimes because of age of stones and the sunlight. I think the reading given to the historical society was done before some of the new stones were placed there and that is why the second list did not have them. The 2 Gehring stones were probably placed after also so that's why they aren't on their list. When I went to this area, I stopped at someone's house to ask whereabouts of cemetery. They did not own the land and I'm not sure who does. It was fun doing this and I learned a lot myself on reading inscriptions. "
