The small cemeteries below were donated to us by the Herkimer County Historical Society and prepared by Town of Herkimer Editor Betsy Voorhees. Some of readings were done years ago by Mr. George Hildebrandt, now in his 90s and still an active volunteer at HCHS. One is noted as being a D.A.R. reading, no date given. All spellings are as on the original lists. We'd appreciate receiving corrections or additional family information from Town of Litchfield researchers and historians to post on this page.
August 8, 2001: Updated information for Gird Family Cemetery courtesy of George Wilcox! Emily Wilcox Gird is on your list as Emily Laura Gird. Her brother, William Wilcox' ashes are buried in the same casket, in a copper or brass box which was shipped there from Tombstone, AZ, where he died. "Will" Wilcox was part owner with John Albert Gird of the Tombstone Mine in Arizona, where copper was mined. The mine filled with water and was closed. John built a barn with mine procedings on the Gird property. The last time I saw the barn was 30 plus years ago, and had "Hibbard Farm" lettered on it. My father, Glenn R. Wilcox, was born near there, and thinks Will was cousin to his grandfher Pelig Newton Wilcox of Litchfield. Glenn is 93 now, remembers attending Emily's and Will's funeral when he was 4 years of age. He knows much of the area and its residents.
Sincerely February 12, 2004: Updated information for Gird Family Cemetery from Steve Burt! Just reviewed your Gird family Cem. list. Mary Crane Gird may have a stone there but is also listed on a stone in Forest Hill in Utica. She died in Utica at the home of her daughter Amanda Mervine. Also the listing of Sylvanus and Sarah Gird seems incorrect. No Sylvanus found in Gird Family. Based on ages I believe these are the parents of Laura King Gird. Sylvanus and Sarah Anderson King. I haven't seen the stones so they may be incorrectly labeled by later generations or incorrectly read or listed in error as the Gird name.
