SMALL CEMETERIES OF THE TOWN OF NORWAY

Herkimer County, N.Y.

The small cemeteries below were donated by the Herkimer County Historical Society and prepared by Town of Frankfort Coordinator Laura Perkins. The original readings were done years ago by Mr. George Hildebrandt, now in his 90s and still an active volunteer at HCHS. All spellings are as on the original lists. We'd appreciate receiving corrections or additional family information from Town of Norway researchers and historians to post on this page.

updated 9/20/99  From Paula Pitts: Referring to the list of abandoned cemetery, Town of Norway, Herkimer Co. - no name listed and the following one labeled Sweet abandoned cemetery.

"In a newspaper clipping I copied from the Herkimer Historical Society surname Bly file, dated 7-15-43 by L. Nelson Nichols, "The record of Phebe Bly born in 1798 as daughter of Allen Bly is not yet found in Rhode Island or Connecticut. She married Horace son of Maze and Abigail (Spencer) Nichols in 1818, lived at Dairy Hill, Norway and is buried as wife of Horace Nichols in the Nichols-Sweet graveyard at Dairy Hill.""

In Legacy Issue No. 1, 1991 by Herkimer County Historical Society New York, The article entitled "No Fjords in this Norway", page 26 says: "Colonel Jared Thayer became noted as the owner of the first 20 cow dairy in Herkimer County and possibly New York State. He took a special interest in cheese dairying. About 1804 he purchased a farm of 100 acres in the original forest about two miles east of Norway Village. He cleared most of it and the timber produced enough potash to pay for the farm. Since that time the section where he settled has been called "Dairy Hill". "
