NEWPORT CEMETERY

An article, by George Metcalf and Alice Hawkins, on page 91 of "A Glimpse in Passing - Newport, NY 1791-1991", says this about the "NEWPORT CEMETERY ASSOCIATION":

"As far back as 1788-1789, the earliest settlers used the area behind the Baptist Church as a burial grounds. The earliest burials are to the left of the church.

"The Newport Cemetery Association was organized on May 8, 1880. The "History of the Town of Newport" 1806-1906, supports the fact that May 26, 1880 the Baptist Church conveyed the burial grounds to the "Association". The first officers of the organization were: Henry Dexter, president; Clinton Moon, secretary; George Hurlburt, treasurer; George Graves, vice president; and trustees, Warren Longstaff, Elisha Thornton, Warren Brayton, and Stuart Perry.

"Our earliest settlers now rest in areas to the left and immediate rear of the church. Interred here are the remains of such prominent men as Christopher Hawkins, Westel Willoughby, Joseph Benchley, Uriah Hawkins, Capt. Stephen Keith, Andrew Harris, Joseph Howe, Jacob Brown, David Munn, Bildad Franklin, Sherman Wooster, Levi Bowen, Pardon Pierce, Jacob Sherwood, Edward Coffin, Benjamin Ford, Stephen Brayton, Jonah Butler, James Keith, Dan Post, George Smith, Hazard Hall, and Asa Cole..."

In the late 1970's George Hildebrandt from Ilion went out with a helper and read the stones in the cemeteries of Herkimer County. Newport Cemetery, listed as #93 on the cemetery map, is located behind the First Baptist Church at 7497 Main Street in the village of Newport. The lists are maintained by the Herkimer County Historical Society. Susan Perkins of the HCHS has kindly granted permission for this list to be transcribed and placed on the Herkimer County NYGenWeb site.

Hereld Stuart is descended from Edward COFFIN, an early settler of Newport, who is buried in this cemetery along with several other relatives. Hereld has taken the time to type up the list of burials in Newport Cemetery as first listed by Mr. Hildebrandt.
